Etymology
Borrowed from German -isch. The native Dutch cognate is -s.[1] The pronunciation /is/ is due to an earlier pronunciation standard, by which all German vowels were to be tense. (The contemporary German standard pronunciation is /ɪʃ/). More at -ish.
