From Middle English -hod, from Old English -hād, from Proto-Germanic *haiduz (compare -head). Cognate with German -heit, Dutch/Afrikaans -heid, Swedish -het, Norwegian -het/-heit, Danish -hed. The Swedish, Norwegian and Danish endings were borrowed from West Germanic.
