Etymology

Generalized from nouns ending in -ба́ (-bá) to which -ище (-išče) had been added. Compare стрельба́ (strelʹbá, shooting) + -ище (-išče)стре́льбище (strélʹbišče, shooting range), later reinterpreted as стреля́ть (streljátʹ) + -бище (-bišče); similarly with мо́льбище (mólʹbišče, prayer ground), originally derived from мольба́ (molʹbá, entreaty, prayer).
