From Elamite 𒋾𒅅𒊏 (ti-ig-ra), from Sumerian 𒀀𒇉𒈦𒄘𒃼 (^ÍDIdigna, ^ÍDIdigina, literally “fast as an arrow”), because Tigris is rough and fast flowing compared to the neighboring Euphrates.
