Suffix

—을게 (-eulge)

  1. An informal verbal suffix expressing future tense, a promise.
    며칠 내로 꼭 갚을게요.
    Myeochil naero kkok gapeulgeyo.
I promise to pay back in a few days.

Usage notes

  • The particle is pronounced with a gemination (doubling tensification), which is normally not shown in the romanisation: —을께 (*-eulkke) and —ᆯ께 (-lkke).
  • The 을게 (-eulge) form is only used after verb stems ending in consonants. For verb stems ending in vowels, the form ᆯ게 (-lge) is used instead.
  • The 을게 (-eulge) form is used in informal non polite speech (해체), and the —을게요 (-eulgeyo) form is used in informal polite speech (해요체). There is no form in formal speech (해라체, 하십시오체), and (-get-) is used instead.
