First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 얼굴 (elkwul). Further etymology unknown; various theories include:

  • Derived from (eol, “spirit, soul”) + 골/굴 (modern (kkol, “form, shape”));
  • Derived from 얽— (eok, “to bind, to tie up”);
  • Derived from 얽— (eok, “(of face) to be pitted (with smallpox)”).
