Suffix

—는다 • (-neunda)

  1. a present tense plain style declarative suffix
    요리사가 잡채를 접시에 담는다.
    Yorisaga japchaereul jeopsie damneunda.
    The cook is putting japchae on a plate.
  2. a plain style monologic interrogative suffix; usually used with interrogative words
    오늘은 저녁에 뭘 먹는다...?
    Oneureun jeonyeoge mwol meongneunda...?
    What would I eat on my dinner today...?

Usage notes

The suffix —는다 (-neunda) is directly attached to the stem of a verb that ends in a consonant other than ㄹ (l).

E.g. 씹다 (ssipda, “to chew”) → 친구가 껌를 씹는다. (Chin-guga kkeomneul ssimneunda., “My friend is chewing a gum.”)

If the stem ends in a vowel or the consonant ㄹ (l), —ᆫ다 (-nda) is used instead. See —ᆫ다 (-nda).
