Uncertain. This term is not attested in Joseon Dynasty-period documents. It may be a native Korean word related to 곶 (got, “peninsula”). However, it may also be a Sino-Korean word 故場 (gojang), "hometown", from 고 (故, go, “old”) + 장 (場, jang, “place”).
