Etymology
From Middle Chinese compound 隣國 (lin kwok, literally “neighbor, next + country”).
After the term was borrowed into Japanese, the 隣 character in the Chinese spelling was replaced by 鄰, moving the radical to the other side. Compare modern Mandarin 鄰國/邻国 (línguó).
