Etymology
In current form Phono-semantic compound (形聲) : semantic 纟 (“thread”) + phonetic 文 (OC *mɯn) – a line of thread.
Note that 文 has a meaning of “mark, tattoo”, hence connotations of “line marks, streaks”, or “lines on the body, wrinkles, fingerprints”.
