From Hindi रुपीया (rupīyā), variant of रुपया (rupayā)/Urdu رپيا (rupayā), coined by Mughal emperor Sher Shah Suri (1540–45), from Sanskrit रूप्यक (rūpyaka, “silver coin”), from रूप्य (rūpya, “wrought silver”).
