This is chiefly a positive term. For negative result 後果／后果 (hòuguǒ) is used.
Unlike Japanese, 效應／效应 (xiàoyìng) is used instead to refer to a scientific phenomenon (Compare Chinese 溫室效應 and Japanese 温室効果).
