From Proto-Indo-European *h₂yu-gʷih₃- (long life) -ής (-ḗs, adjective suffix). Cognate to Latin iūgis, Avestan 𐬫𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬈-𐬘𐬍- (yauuae-jī-), Proto-Germanic *ajukiz.
