ὄρτυξ
Ancient Greek
Etymology
Several theories exist:[1]
- From Proto-Indo-European *wort-, whence also Sanskrit वर्तिका (vártikā), वर्तक (vartaka).
- From Pre-Greek, as suggested by the alternation of the ending -ῠγος (-ugos) ~ -ῠκος (-ukos).
Pronunciation
- (5th BCE Attic) IPA(key): /ór.tyks/
- (1st CE Egyptian) IPA(key): /ˈor.tyks/
- (4th CE Koine) IPA(key): /ˈor.tyks/
- (10th CE Byzantine) IPA(key): /ˈor.tyks/
- (15th CE Constantinopolitan) IPA(key): /ˈor.tiks/
