ὄρτυξ

Ancient Greek

Etymology

Several theories exist:[1]

  • From Proto-Indo-European *wort-, whence also Sanskrit वर्तिका (vártikā), वर्तक (vartaka).
  • From Pre-Greek, as suggested by the alternation of the ending -ῠγος (-ugos) ~ -ῠκος (-ukos).
