Loaned from Sanskrit मिथुना (mithunā) instrumental form of मिथ (mitha), from Proto-Indo-European *meth₂-, *meta (“with”). Cognate with Ancient Greek μετά (metá, “among, between, with”), and Proto-Germanic *midi.
