Etymology

From Proto-Kartvelian *ḳalmax- (“fish”).[1][2] Cognate with Georgian კალმახი (ḳalmaxi) and Svan კალმახ (ḳalmax), კალმა̈ხ (ḳalmäx), კალმახუ̂ (ḳalmaxû).

On the other hand, Marr derives from Armenian կարմրախայտ (karmraxayt).[3] Mentioning Marr's proposal, Ačaṙean remarks that the Armenian word is attested already in Grigor Magistros.[4]
