Etymology 2
From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-riŋ ~ s-r(j)aŋ (“to live, to be alive”). Cognate with Tibetan གསིང་མ (gsing ma, “pastureland”), Old Chinese 生 (*sreŋ, sreŋ-s, “to live, be born”) and Chinese 牲 (shēng, “animal”).
