From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *l-ta-s/t (“to look”). Related to ལྟས (ltas, “sign, omen”) and ལྟད་མོ (ltad mo, “sight, scene, show, play”). Compare Chinese 睹 (OC *taːʔ, “to see”).
