From Proto-Tai *ɣoːᴬ (“neck”), from Middle Chinese 喉 (MC ɦəu, “larynx, throat”). Cognate with Thai คอ (kɔɔ) or ฅอ (kɔɔ), Shan ၶေႃး (khóa), Ahom 𑜁𑜦𑜡 (khoo) or 𑜁𑜞𑜦𑜡 (khroo), Zhuang hoz, Saek กฺ๊อ.
