From Middle Chinese 聲 (MC ɕiᴇŋ, “sound”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩈ᩠ᨿᨦ, Lao ສຽງ (sīang), Lü ᦵᦉᧂ (ṡeng), Shan သဵင် (sěng), Tai Nüa ᥔᥥᥒᥴ (seng1), Ahom 𑜏𑜢𑜂𑜫 (sing), Khmer សៀង (siəng). Related to สำเนียง (sǎm-niiang).
