Etymology
From Middle Khmer bitāna, bītāna, biyatāna, bīyatāna, bidāra, bbhitāna, bhīttāna, phtāna, vitāṇa (“protective cloth covering mounted on poles above a sacred person or object: canopy, awning”), from Angkorian Old Khmer vitāna (ibid.), from Pali vitāna (“canopy; awning”) or Sanskrit वितान (vitāna, “spreading out; expansion; extension; awning; canopy; etc”); compare Modern Khmer ពិតាន (pitaan, “ceiling; canopy”). Cognate with Lao ເພດານ (phē dān), ພິດານ (phi dān).
