From Old Khmer iśvara° (“lord; epithet of Śiva”); ultimately from Sanskrit ईश्वर (īśvara, “chief; lord; master; etc”). Compare Angkorian Old Khmer īśvara. Cognate with Modern Khmer ឦស្វរៈ (’eisvâréa’).
