Borrowed from Sanskrit आचार्य (ācārya, “preceptor; teacher”); perhaps via Old Khmer ʼācāryya, ʼācārya, ʼācāryya (“spiritual preceptor; instructor, pedagogue, professor, teacher; expert”). Cognate with Khmer អាចារ្យ (ʾaacaayɔɔ), អាចរិយ (ʾaacrii); Lao ອາຈານ (’ā chān).
