From Proto-Tai *panᴬ (“to divide”). Cognate with Lao ປັນ (pan), Shan ပၼ် (pan1). Compare Middle Chinese 分 (MC pɨun, bɨunH, “to divide, distribute”), 頒 (MC bɨun, pˠan, “to confer, bestow”), 朌 (MC bɨun, pˠan, “to distribute”).
