From Proto-Tai *p.taːjᴬ (“to die”). Cognate with Lao ຕາຍ (tāi), Lü ᦎᦻ (ṫaay), Shan တၢႆ (tǎay), Ahom 𑜄𑜩 (tay), Zhuang dai. Compare Proto-Austronesian *(m-)atay (“to die”).
