Borrowed from Pali gaṇikā (“prostitute”, literally “she who belongs to groups; she who is familiar with groups”) or from Sanskrit गणिका (gaṇikā). Cognate with Burmese ဂဏိကာ (ga.ni.ka); Khmer គណិកា (kɔɔnekaa).
