From Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑀸𑀳𑀸𑀟 (*pāhāḍa, “mountain”). Cognate with Sylheti ꠙꠣꠀꠠ (faaṛ), Bengali পাহাড় (pahaṛ), Nepali पहाड (pahāḍa), Hindustani language پہاڑ / पहाड़ (pahāṛ, “mountain”), Punjabi ਪਹਾੜ (pahāṛ), Gujarati પહાડ (pahāḍ).
