Etymology

From Magadhi Prakrit [Term?] (compare Maharastri Prakrit 𑀥𑀻𑀆 (dhīā)), from Sanskrit दुहितृ (duhitṛ). Cognate with Sylheti ꠎꠤ (zi), Oriya ଝିଅ (jhiô), Hindi धी (dhī), धिया (dhiyā).

Usage note

Like other Assamese kinship nouns, জী (zi) uses the -ক (-k) suffix for 3rd person. For example,

(জী (zi) without a suffix is less commonly used. ছোৱালী (süali, girl) is mostly used.)
