Etymology

From Old Marathi वाजणे (vājaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀯𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀇 (vajjaï), from Sanskrit वाद्यते (vādyate). Compare Gujarati વાગવું (vāgvũ), Hindi बजना (bajnā), Nepali बज्नु (bajnu), Assamese বজা (boza).

  1. to ring, chime, make noise
  2. to hit the hour
    तीन मिनिटात दोन वाजतील.
    tīn miniṭāt don vāj̈tīl.
    It will be two o'clock in three minutes.
