From Proto-Indo-Aryan *yáȷ́ati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *yáĵati, from Proto-Indo-European *Hyeh₂ǵ- (“to worship, to revere, to sacrifice”). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἅζομαι (házomai, “to stand in awe”), ἅγιος (hágios, “holy, sacred”), Avestan 𐬀𐬙𐬀𐬰𐬀𐬫 (yazata), Persian ایزد (izad, “God”).
