From Proto-Indo-Aryan *yáȷ́ati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *yáĵati, from Proto-Indo-European *Hyeh₂ǵ- (to worship, to revere, to sacrifice). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἅζομαι (házomai, to stand in awe), ἅγιος (hágios, holy, sacred), Avestan 𐬀𐬙𐬀𐬰𐬀𐬫 (yazata), Persian ایزد (izad, God).
