From Old Marathi बैसणें (baisaṇeṃ), बैठणे (baiṭhṇe), from Sanskrit उपविशति (upaviśati, to sit; to approach). Compare Gujarati બેસવું (besvũ), Hindi बैठना (baiṭhnā), Nepali बस्नु (basnu), Bengali বসা (bôśa), Assamese বহা (boha).
