From Old Marathi पडणे (paḍaṇe), Maharastri Prakrit 𑀧𑀟𑀇 (paḍaï), from Sanskrit पतति (patati, “to fly, fall”). Compare Hindi पड़ना (paṛnā), Gujarati પડવું (paḍvũ), Nepali पर्नु (parnu), Bengali পড়া (pôṛa).
