Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *h₃ni-n-d-e-ti (“to revile”), nasal infix present of *h₃neyd-. Cognate with Gothic 𐌽𐌴𐌹𐌸 (neiþ, “hatred, spite”), Latvian naids (“hatred”), Ancient Greek ὄνειδος (óneidos, “reproach”).[1]
