Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hnā́ma, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁nómn̥ (name). Cognate with Ancient Greek ὄνομα (ónoma), Latin nōmen, Avestan 𐬥𐬁𐬨𐬀𐬥 (nāman), Old Persian 𐎴𐎠𐎶 (n-a-m /nāma/) (whence Persian نام (nâm)), Hittite 𒆷𒀀𒈠𒀭 (lāman), Old English nama (whence English name).

  4. (grammar) a noun (as opposed to a verb)
  5. substance, essence (in the mīmāṃsā philosophy opposed to guṇa, accidental quality)
  6. a good or great name, renown, fame (only at the end of a compound; compare श्वनामन् (śvanāman), सुमन्तुनामन् (sumantunāman))
