From Old Marathi नातु (nātu), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀡𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀼 (ṇattu), from Sanskrit नपात् (napāt), नप्तृ (naptṛ), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *nápāts, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *nápāts. Compare Konkani नाथु.
