From Proto-Indo-Aryan *nápāts, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *nápāts, from Proto-Indo-European *népōts. Cognates include Old Persian 𐎴𐎱𐎠 (napā), Latin nepōs, Ancient Greek ἀνεψιός (anepsiós) and Old English nefa. Doublet of नप्तृ (naptṛ), that is influenced by other kinship terms suffixed with -तृ (-tṛ) (from Proto-Indo-European *-tḗr) like मातृ (mātṛ).
