From Proto-Indo-European *gʷiH-. Cognate with Ancient Greek βιός (biós, bow-string, tendon), Old Church Slavonic жила (žila), Lithuanian gýsla, Old Armenian ջիլ (ǰil) , Avestan 𐬲𐬌𐬌𐬁 (žiiā, bow-string) and Persian زه (zeh).
