From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ĵʰáĵʰaHti, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰé-ǵʰeh₁-ti (“to abandon, to leave”), from *ǵʰeh₁-. Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬰𐬁𐬌𐬙𐬌 (zazāiti), Latin hērēs and Ancient Greek χήρα (khḗra, “widow”).
