From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ĵʰáĵʰaHti, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰé-ǵʰeh₁-ti (to abandon, to leave), from *ǵʰeh₁-. Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬰𐬁𐬌𐬙𐬌 (zazāiti), Latin hērēs and Ancient Greek χήρα (khḗra, widow).
