From Proto-Indo-Iranian *kʰād-, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷh₂ed-.[1] Cognate with Avestan 𐬬𐬍-𐬑𐬀𐬛𐬀-‎‎ (vī-xada-‎, “to squeeze apart”), Parthian 𐫟𐫀𐫉𐫏𐫗𐫅‎ (xʾzynd, “to devour”), modern Persian خاییدن‎ (xâyidan), and Old Armenian խածանեմ (xacanem).[2]
