From Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀏𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀮 (ekkala), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀏𑀓𑀮 (*ekala), probably from Sanskrit एक (eka, “one”). Cognate with Gujarati એકલું (ekalũ). Cognate with Assamese অকল (okol, “only”), অকলে (okole).
