From Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀅𑀁𑀕𑀼𑀝𑁆𑀞 (aṃguṭṭha), from Sanskrit अङ्गुष्ठ (aṅguṣṭha), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hangúštʰas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eng- (“joint”). Cognate with Gujarati અંગૂઠો (ãṅgūṭho), Marathi अंगठा (ãṅgaṭhā), and Rajasthani अंगुठौ (ãṅguṭhau).
