Back-formation from النَّاس (an-nās), contraction of الْأُنَاس (al-ʾunās). Cognate with Aramaic אֲנָשָׁא (ʾănāšā), Classical Syriac ܐܲܢܵܫܵܐ, ܢܵܫܵܐ (ʾanāšā, nāšā), Biblical Hebrew אֱנוֹשׁ (ʾĕnōš) (whence English Enos).
