Back-formation from النَّاس‎ (an-nās), contraction of الْأُنَاس‎ (al-ʾunās). Cognate with Aramaic אֲנָשָׁא‎ (ʾănāšā), Classical Syriac ܐܲܢܵܫܵܐ, ܢܵܫܵܐ‎ (ʾanāšā, nāšā), Biblical Hebrew אֱנוֹשׁ‎ (ʾĕnōš) (whence English Enos).
