From Middle Persian [script needed] (myh /mēx/), from Old Persian 𐎶𐎹𐎧 (MYUX /mayūxa/), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mayū́kʰas (“peg, nail”). Cognate with Sanskrit मयूख (mayūkha, “peg”).
