Usage notes

The word مِئَة‎ (miʾa) is an inherently feminine noun. The gender is visible in constructions like three hundred (see above), where the feminine ثَلَاث‎ (ṯalāṯ, “three”) appears, agreeing with مِئَة‎ (miʾa). The plural of مِئَة‎ (miʾa) is the same as the singular when used with the numbers 3 through 9, which normally govern a noun in the genitive plural (cf. ثَلَاثَةُ آلَافٍ (ṯalāṯatu ʾālāfin, “three thousand”), with plural آلَاف‎ (ʾālāf)). The plural مِئَات‎ (miʾāt) occurs only when used to mean hundreds, i.e. an unspecified large number. The alternate form of مِا۟ئَة‎ (miʾa) has a supplimentary Alif added to avoid confusion with other words in early Kufic script, which did not include إِعْجَام‎ (ʾiʿjām, “letter dots”).
