Etymology

Derived from the active participle of عَقَلَ (ʿaqala, to be endowed with reason, to have intelligence, to be conscious, to realize), from the root ع ق ل (ʿ-q-l).

عَاقِل (ʿāqil) (feminine عَاقِلَة (ʿāqila), masculine plural عُقَّال (ʿuqqāl) or عُقَلَاء (ʿuqalāʾ), feminine plural عَوَاقِل (ʿawāqil) or عَاقِلَات (ʿāqilāt), elative أَعْقَل (ʾaʿqal))

  1. reasonable, endowed with reason, prudent
  2. intelligent
  3. entitled to an inheritance
