سورة

See also: سوره and شوره

Arabic

سُورَة

Etymology 1

Ordered at the root س و ر (s-w-r), but probably a loan from Hebrew שׁוּרָה (šūrā, row, line). The reason for this is that it first appears for the Qurʾānic sections and no more primitive meaning is attested. See also سُور (sūr, wall) which is loaned from Aramaic.
