Borrowed from Persian سفید (sefid), from earlier سپید (sapêd), from Middle Persian spyt' (spēd, “white”), eventually from Proto-Indo-European *ḱweytos (“bright; shine”). Compare with Sanskrit श्वेत (śveta).
