From the root ر م ي‎ (r-m-y). Cognate with Hebrew רָמָה‎ (ramá, “cast, shoot”).

1. to throw, to toss
   • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 8:17:

     فَلَمْ تَقْتُلُوهُمْ وَلَكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَتَلَهُمْۚ وَمَا رَمَيْتَ إِذْ رَمَيْتَ وَلَكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ رَمَىٰۚ وَلِيُبْلِىَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْهُ بَلَآءً حَسَنًاۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌۭ

     fa-lam taqtulūhum wa-lākinna llāha qatalahum wa-mā ramayta ʾiḏ ramayta wa-lākinna llāha ramā wa-li-yubliya l-muʾminīna minhu balāʾan ḥasanan ʾinna llāha samīʿun ʿalīmun

     And you did not kill them, but it was Allah who killed them. And you threw not, [O Muhammad], when you threw, but it was Allah who threw that He might test the believers with a good test. Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
