حامل

See also: جامل

Arabic

Etymology

Derived from the active participle of حَمَلَ (ḥamala, to carry).

Adjective

حَامِل (ḥāmil) (feminine plural حَوَامِلُ (ḥawāmilu))

  1. pregnant

Usage notes

حَامِل (ḥāmil, pregnant) is virtually always encountered in the feminine due to semantic constraints. It is also unusual in that the feminine form lacks the usual feminine ending. Note that, when used as a participle of حَمَلَ (ḥamala), حَامِل (ḥāmil, carrying) has masculine forms, and the feminine form of the participle, حَامِلَة (ḥāmila), takes the usual feminine ending.
