Short for مَدِينَة الْقُدْس (madīnat al-quds). From قُدْس (quds), from the root ق د س (q-d-s). Cognate to Old South Arabian 𐩤𐩵𐩪 (qds) and to Hebrew קודש \ קֹדֶשׁ (kódesh).
